Types of Flooring for a House
Updated
Flooring is chosen for the room, the traffic, the look and the budget — a living room, a bathroom and a terrace each want a different material. This guide covers the flooring types used in Indian homes, where each suits, and how to choose, so the floor lasts and the estimate is right.

Common flooring types
| Flooring | Character | Where it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Vitrified tile | Hard, low-porosity, large formats | The default for living areas and bedrooms |
| Ceramic tile | Cheaper, glazed | Kitchens, bathrooms, budget floors |
| Anti-skid ceramic | Matte, grippy | Bathroom and balcony floors |
| Marble | Natural, premium look; needs care | Living rooms, temples, feature areas |
| Granite | Very hard, stain-resistant | Kitchen platforms, stairs, high-traffic floors |
| Wooden / laminate | Warm look; keep away from water | Bedrooms, study |
| IPS / cement | Cheap, durable grey floor | Utility, parking, budget rooms |
| Terrazzo (mosaic) | Chips set in cement, polished | Older homes, durable and repairable |
| Epoxy / PU | Seamless, chemical-resistant | Garages, utility, industrial areas |
| Kota / natural stone | Hard, matte, economical | Stairs, verandahs, parking |
Vitrified tiles are the everyday choice for living areas — hard, low-maintenance and available in large formats. Granite wins for kitchen platforms and heavy traffic; anti-skid ceramic is right for wet areas.
How to choose by room
- Living / bedrooms → vitrified tiles (or wood for warmth).
- Kitchen → vitrified floor with granite platform.
- Bathrooms / balconies → anti-skid ceramic or matte tiles.
- Stairs / parking / verandah → granite, Kota or IPS.
Match wall tiles and skirting, and keep grout lines consistent. Slip resistance in wet areas matters more than looks.
Working out the quantity
Order tiles or stone against the floor area plus about 10% wastage for cuts and breakage — more for diagonal layouts or small rooms. Work out the exact tiles, boxes and adhesive with the tile calculator, and price it on the flooring cost and tiling labour pages.
Frequently asked questions
What are the main types of flooring for a house? Vitrified and ceramic tiles, marble and granite, wooden or laminate, IPS/cement, terrazzo (mosaic), epoxy, and natural stones like Kota. Vitrified tile is the most common today.
Which flooring is best for an Indian home? Vitrified tiles suit most living areas — hard, low-maintenance and affordable. Granite is best for kitchen platforms and high-traffic areas, and anti-skid ceramic for wet areas.
What flooring should be used in bathrooms? Anti-skid (matte) ceramic or vitrified tiles are best in bathrooms and balconies because they resist slipping when wet. Glossy floor tiles are unsafe in wet areas.
Is vitrified tile better than marble? Vitrified tile is harder, cheaper and lower-maintenance, with consistent large formats. Marble is a natural premium material with a unique look but needs more care and periodic polishing. The choice is budget and look.
How much extra flooring should I order for wastage? Order about 10% extra for cuts and breakage in a regular room, and 15% or more for diagonal layouts, small bathrooms or lots of cuts around fittings.
