Buy a little extra and keep it — dye-lot shades vary between batches, so a few spare tiles from the same lot save a mismatched repair later. Tile adhesive is estimated at ~4 kg/m²; check the bag. Rates on the flooring cost and tiling labour pages.
How it works
- Tiles (no waste) = area ÷ the area of one tile.
- Add wastage — usually 10% for straight-laid tiles, more for diagonal patterns or small, cut-heavy rooms.
- Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles-per-box, rounded up. Tile adhesive is estimated at about 4 kg/m².
Worked example
Tile 100 m² with 600 × 600 mm tiles (0.36 m² each, 4 per box) at 10% wastage:
- Area with wastage = 100 × 1.10 = 110 m²
- Tiles = 110 ÷ 0.36 = 306 tiles
- Boxes = 306 ÷ 4 = 77 boxes
Tiles per box (typical)
| Tile size | Area each | Tiles/box |
|---|---|---|
| 600 × 600 mm | 0.36 m² | 4 |
| 800 × 800 mm | 0.64 m² | 3 |
| 600 × 1200 mm | 0.72 m² | 2 |
| 300 × 600 mm | 0.18 m² | 6 |
| 300 × 300 mm | 0.09 m² | 11 |
Boxes vary by brand — check the carton before you order.
Frequently asked questions
How many tiles do I need for a room? Divide the floor area by the area of one tile, then add about 10% for cuts and breakage. For a 100 m² floor in 600 × 600 tiles that is roughly 306 tiles, or 77 boxes.
How much wastage should I allow for tiles? 10% for a simple straight lay in a regular room; 15% or more for diagonal layouts, small bathrooms, or lots of cuts around fittings.
How much tile adhesive do I need? About 4 kg/m² for a standard notched-trowel bed — check the adhesive bag for its own coverage.
Should I buy extra tiles? Yes, and keep the spares from the same batch. Dye-lot shades vary between production runs, so a later repair from a new box can look mismatched.
