RCC stands for Reinforced Cement Concrete — concrete with steel reinforcement bars embedded in it. The concrete carries compression, the steel carries tension, and together they make the beams, columns and slabs that hold a modern building up.

Why steel is added to concrete

Concrete is strong in compression but roughly ten times weaker in tension — it cracks and fails when stretched. Steel is excellent in tension. By casting steel bars where a member is being stretched (the bottom of a simply supported beam, the top of a cantilever), the two materials act together: this is the whole idea of "reinforced" concrete. They also expand and contract at nearly the same rate with temperature, so they stay bonded.

Where RCC is used in a house

  • Foundations (footings, rafts)
  • Columns — the vertical load-carrying members
  • Beams — spanning between columns
  • Slabs — the floors and roof
  • Staircases, lintels, chhajjas and water tanks

RCC design in India follows IS 456:2000, which fixes the grade, cover, mix and reinforcement rules.
