What is Door?

Door is not necessarily hinged, nowadays rotating and sliding door are also in trend. Doors can slide in grooves and can completely be hidden.

Function of Doors

Doors are not just installed at entrance of structure but it has certain key functions to perform. The most important functions of a door are shown below.

Why Door Size Matters

Door size matters a lot as one needs to easily pass through the doors and move in and out certain mobility devices.

Fair Housing Act recommends a minimum of 32 inches door size in order to have easy access of your home. According to Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standard door size should be 36 inches for safe mobility of disabled persons.

But width of door ranges from 18 inches to 42 inches and even more depending upon the purpose and need.

The height of door is usually kept to be 80 inches but in some cases and designs height can be increased or decreased.

Standard Door Size

As explained earlier door size differs for the purpose of the doors and area of use. Standard door size for internal rooms will be different from the door size of exterior doors.

When talking about standard door size for interior doors and exterior doors the following standard sizes of doors are used.

One thing is to be noted is that standard door height of interior and exterior door is 80 inches or 6 ft 8 inches.

Please note that door size is different then the door frame size. Below we have explained about the door frame and standard size of door frame. Standard door size is the opening of the door but frames are a bit wider and longer the doors.

What is Door Frame and Standard Size of Door Frame

Door frame are frame structure that supports the door. A load of door are transferred to the building or structure through the door frame. Door frames can be made of different materials like wood, granite, etc.

The primary function of door frame is to support door. Door is hinged on to door frame and it is also locked with the help of door frame. Door frames are wider and longer in comparison to the doors.

Frame of doors are made of 2 inches to 4 inches thick wood or other material. Thus to get the length of door frame we have to add the thickness of door frame on both sides with door opening size.

The vertical part of door frame are called jambs or posts. While top horizontal part connecting the two jambs is called the head.

Thus,

width of door frame = Thickness of door frame on both side + Door size

Length of door frame = Thickness of door frame + Door length

Standard Door Width

Width of door decides the opening of the room or house. Thus proper care should be kept when deciding the width of the door.

Standard door width according to Fair Housing Act is minimum of 32 inches door size in order to have easy access to your home.

According to Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standard door size should be 36 inches for safe mobility of disabled persons.

International Residential Code sets minimum width requirements as 32 inches.

Thus standard minimum door width is 32 inches. But according to function and requirements door width vary from 18 inches to 42 inches and even more.

Standard Door Height

height of door decides the entrance height. Usually door height is decided based on the height of users in the case of residential houses.

For industries, height of door can be much higher as compared to the height of a residential door as it depends upon the type of tools, machinery, and plants that need to be maneuvered through the doors.

Standard door height ranges from 80″ to 96 inches based on the average height of an individual crossing the door.

The standard height of door in the US is 80 inches which is 6 ft 8 inches high. But the standard height of doors in India is 84 inches which is 7 feet.

Door height is increased based on the requirement and in some cases for making an aesthetically pleasing entrance to make it look grand. It can be as high as 96″ for custom doors.

Standard Size of Entrance Doors

Entrance doors are main doors at the entry of a house. Entrance doors can be single door or double door. The standard door size of entrance door depends upon the type of door.

The door can be a single-paneled door or double paneled door. In a single-panel door, only one door is used to close the door. But for double-paneled doors, two equal parts of the door panels of the same height are used.
